Dog breeds: welsh corgi cardiganWelsh-Corgi dog breed has two varieties, which the International Cynological Federation recognized as two separate breeds. In the previous article we told about the breed of welsh corgi pembroke, now came the turn of a little less famous breed - welsh corgi cardigan.

Both breeds were bred in Wales, but in differentcounties: welsh-corgi cardigan - in the county of Cardiganshire, and pembroke - in the county of Pembrokeshire. Although these breeds are similar, they almost never crossed among themselves, because these counties are far from each other. Crossing did not lead to anything, so the specialists recognized pembrokes and cardigans as two different breeds. It is believed that the Welsh corgi cardigan breed appeared earlier than the Pembroke.

Outwardly, the Welsh corgi breed is like a pembroke, but there are differences. Cardigans are larger than pembroke (their weight reaches 15 kilograms), they are heavierskeleton, wider chest, longer than paws, back more straight and firm. If the pembroke looks like a Spitz, the cardigans are more like miniature short-legged German shepherds.

At all, Cardigans produce a more "solid" impression than pembroke: in spite of their small size, they are strong, noble, workable dogs. If the pembroke people are touched, the cardigans inspire them with respect.

Cardigans have absolutely different outlines of the head, there is nothing "fox" in them. The ears of the welsh corgi cardigan dogs are sharp, while the pembrokes are rounded. Also there is a difference in color: the cardigans are allowed the colors blue-merle and brindle (tiger), forbidden for pembroke. In color, more white is allowed than pembroke, but it should not be basic or be around the eyes.

There is also the opinion that the welsh corgi cardigan differs from the pembroke in that it has a tail. In fact, there are tails and pembroke, just before they were taken to stop. Cardigans did not stop the tails.

There are some differences in character. All Corgi are very friendly, charming, balanced, perfectly attached to the owner. They have a sense of tact and even a sense of humor (by dog standards). But the welsh corgi cardigan is more calmer than the pembrokecaution and prudence are inherent in them. They are more sedate and slower, in contrast to impulsive and spontaneous pembrokes.

Cardigans - territorial dogs. They, like the pembroke, are active and mobile, slightly lose pembroke in speed, but they win in stamina. If you compare corgi with runners, pembrokes are sprinters, and cardigans are marathon runners. Pembroke movements are more smooth, light, active, and cardigans - powerful and intermittent.

Welsh corgi cardigan - tireless and unpretentiousdogs, very fond of children and treat all people evenly, although they are slightly more distrustful of strangers than pembrokes. They quickly become the pets of the whole family. But keep in mind that they need daily walks, in addition, they can not be overfed: like all corgi, cardigans are prone to obesity.

These dogs should not be allowed to jump from a height, especially if they have extra weight, this can be fraught with spinal injuries. You also need to closely monitor the condition of your pet's eyes: in spite of the fact that in the breed there is almost no progressive atrophy of the retina, the health of the eyes should be controlled.

Despite the fact that the welsh-cordi cardigan is lessa popular breed than their counterparts from the county of Pembrokeshire (and in all the "fault" of Queen Elizabeth II, who preferred pembroke), this is a fine breed for keeping the house. If you need a dedicated and solid companion dog, which will always be there, but it does not bore you with excessive playfulness and activity, then your choice is a welsh corgi cardigan.

In general, one can not say that any of the two breeds of welsh corgi is better or worse: they are just a little different, and choose your own corgi is based on what kind of appearance and character you prefer. Then your corgi will become your true friend and companion.
