Terry Pratchett "Flat World"As ungrateful as it may sometimes be, the writer'scraft, most writers will never abandon it, because it gives them a truly unique opportunity - the ability to create their own worlds. One of the most famous and detailed fictional worlds is, undoubtedly, "Flat world" Terry Pratchett.

"Flat World" is a series of books written in the genre of humorous (satirical) fantasy. First book, "The color of magic", Was published in 1983. In total, the cycle consists of more than 30 novels, several stories, directories, maps and even one cookbook. Now Terry Pratchett is working on a novel that has the working title "Raising taxes".

The cycle "Flat World" is divided into several series, each of which has its place of action and the main characters (in this case, the heroes of sub-cycles can overlap). The heroes of the main series are:

  • Rincewind - graduate of the Unseen University. Teachers considered him an absolute lack of talent, but in fact Rincewind can be called the greatest wizard in the flat world. He was the hero of the first book of the whole cycle.

  • Lankar Witches - Nanny Yagg, the strongest witch of the Flat World, mother Vetrovosk and their friends.

  • Death - in this world, a masculine gender, he has a braid, a white horse, and also several assistants: the granddaughter of the granddaughter Susan Hundred of Helits, the servant Albert and the Death of the Rats.

  • City guard Ankh-Morpork - Commander of the Guard Samuel Vimes and his subordinates.

  • Tiffany Hurts - a young witch from Mel.

  • Moist von Lipwig - a talented adventurer in the civil service.

But the main question remains: why "Flat World"? The answer to it is unexpectedly simple: A flat world is really ... flat! it a huge disk, resting on the backs of four elephants (Berylia, Tubul, the Great T "Fon and Jerakin), which, in turn, stand on the back of a giant cosmic tortoise Great And "Tuina, floating in one of her known direction.

In a flat world, magic is quite material, lightmoves slowly, and the rainbow consists of eight colors (the eighth - and there is the same color of magic, octarine). In this world, side by side live people and zombies, trolls and elves, gnomes and golems. In this world, our myths become reality. In this world, Death carries gifts for Christmas (forgive me, Scarecrow) instead of Santa Claus (oh, again, forgive me ... Santa Hryakusa).

Terry Pratchett began writing "Flat World" as a parody of modern fantasy, but over time his novels grew in completely unique works, not tied to the parodic genre. His books are admired not only by readers, but even by literary critics. In some novels comic books and plays, radio shows and cartoons, screen versions and video games were created.

Quotations from books

"This is the most stupid thing in magic. You spend twenty years trying to learn a spell and summon naked virgins to your bedroom, but by this time you are soaked with mercury vapor, and your eyes stop seeing, spoiled by reading old grimoires. You can not even remember why you needed these virgins. " (Rincewind, The Color of Magic)

"Owning a hundred slums is not a crimeis, whereas living in a slum is a crime. Being an assassin - the Guild, of course, did not declare it openly, but took only the offspring of noble families into it - it was not considered a crime. If you have enough money, you simply can not commit a crime. What you are doing is just a little innocent prank "(Samuel Vimes, "To arms! To arms! ")

"A whole bunch of people are in love with each other, a lotmasks and all sorts of disguises, a cheeky servant, all at a loss, no one knows who that is, a couple of elderly dukes go mad, a gypsy choir, well, and all that. Typical opera » (Nanny Yagg, Masquerade)
