Indoor plants: dracaena

Such a "palm tree in miniature" - dracaena - will be the decoration of any home interior. This plant will please you at any time of the year, because its main beauty lies in its peculiar leaves.
They are monotonous and striped, wide andNot really. In general, in conditions of natural habitat (in the forests of South Asia and Africa) the dracenes bloom. But in the room conditions the dracauna is grown not as a flowering one, but as original plant with interesting leaves.
Dracaena refers to unpretentious and not requiring special care plants.
In nature the number of Dracen species exceeds a hundred, but at home you can only breedseveral. For example, dracaena draco - the so-called "dragon tree". In the room conditions, this dracaena grows to 1.5 m. Dracaena deremensis (Dracena Derekmaya) can reach the same dimensions. But dracaena marginata (dracena marginata) grows up to 3 meters and has leaves up to 70 cm long. Impressive, right? Dracaena fragrans (dracaena fragrant) differs from its "relatives" with wide long leaves, slightly wavy along the edges. The only dracaena that has oval rather than long leaves is dracaena godseffiana (dracaena godseffa). In height, the plant reaches 70 cm.
How to choose the dracaena? When buying dracaena, first of all, payattention to the leaves. They should be fresh, without the dried up edges and stains. Unpretentious are the species of dracen with narrow leaves. But species with broad leaves require more careful care and attention, they need more daylight and constant hydration. This is because the broad leaves evaporate the moisture more strongly.
To make the dracene well established in your home, the most important thing you have to do is choose a suitable place for it. Direct sunlight can greatly damageplant, but at the same time, absolutely without the sun, the dracaena will perish. In addition, variegated forms of dracen should grow in the light, otherwise they lose their amazing coloration. The way out in this situation is diffuse light, penumbra.
Although the dracaena in winter can bear a fairly low air temperature, it is better to ensure that it does not fall below +12 degrees.
Soil for Drazen is prepared from equal parts of turf and leaf land, peat, humus and sand.
With good care, the dracaena grows rapidly, and once a year it is needed transplant - in pots, a little big in size. Remember, it is "a little". After all, if the container is too large, the plant may die. It is not necessary to transplant a large dracaena so often - it is enough only to partially replace the top layer of soil with fresh, rich in nutrients. Only do this very carefully, so as not to damage the root system.
In nature Dracaena grows in humid climates, so the houseplant needs enough water. It is very important that the earth is wet, but not too much.
Dry air will not cause damage to the dracene homoseff andmarginal, the other species should be regularly sprayed. It is useful for the normal growth and development of plants from time to time to put a pot on a wet pebble.
In the summer, pour abundant, and in winter moderately so that the soilcould dry up between watering. Do not allow excess water in the pot. It is recommended to water the plant with standing water at room temperature. The plant is watered abundantly a day or two after the top layer of the soil has dried to a depth of about 5 cm. At temperatures above +18 degrees, the plant should be watered about once every 10 days. Remember that a pot with a capacity of 10 liters should account for at least 1.5-2 liters of standing water at room temperature.
