The EOS 40D provides high image quality with sensitivity up to ISO 1600, the sensitivity range can be extended to H: 3200 for situations where flash use is prohibited or undesirable.

The priority mode of light colors allowsphotographers taking pictures of landscapes and weddings, working in a wide dynamic range when shooting with sensitivity from ISO 200 and getting more precise details of tones on wedding dresses, clouds and other light objects.

Processor DIGIC III provides speed shooting6.5 frames per second and uses a buffer to process up to 75 large-size JPEG images (17 images in RAW format) without interruption. Processing 14-bit images allows you to increase the depth of color and provide a smoother gradation for exceptionally accurate color reproduction.

A new autofocus system with a central crosshair

The key advantage of the EOS 40D is the new system9-point autofocusing with a central crosshair. All 9 AF points can provide focus in the vertical and horizontal planes.

The center AF point providesaccurate focus with aperture f / 2.8, while 8 other points work with f / 5.6 aperture. Added at the request of consumers button to turn on autofocus allows photographers to include autofocus with their thumb.

LCD monitor with support for viewing in real time

Real-time viewing mode simplifiesshooting at an unusual angle (for example, macro at ground level or shooting on a tripod). 3-inch LCD monitor displays pictures in real time; you can use the switchable mode "Grid Template" or a live histogram that simulates the exposure of images.

The autofocus button enablesinstantly raise the mirror and activate the autofocus function. The live view mode allows photographers working in the studio to change settings and take pictures from a PC using the supplied EOS software.

Full control

The EOS 40D is fully configurableaccording to the preferences of the photographer. The control dial allows you to program three user configurations that the photographer can quickly switch. The new "My Menu" tab provides quick access to frequently used settings; 24 user functions enable photographers to fine-tune the operation and operation of the camera. Additional flexibility is provided by the ability to change the focusing screen (2 additional screens are available).

In order to simplify the work with system accessories, the Speedlite 580EX II flash settings of the WFT-E3 wireless file transfer device can now be changed using the LCD monitor.

Wireless WFT-E3 File Transmitter

Canon also introduces a wireless transmitterWFT-E3 files. Designed for EOS 40D wireless file transfer WFT-E3 allows you to quickly transfer pictures to remote FTP servers, and also provides two-way communication via PTP and HTTP. In HTTP mode, remote users can click the shutter button or download images from the camera via an Internet browser. The PTP protocol is used for remote shooting with the EOS 40D camera and the supplied EOS application.

Wireless WFT-E3 File Transmitterconnect directly to an external hard disk (HDD), which will increase the time of shooting. When connected to a portable GPS device, EXIF data about the location and time of shooting is automatically added to each image. For ease of shooting in a vertical position, the camera is equipped with a shutter release button and a main control dial.

Together with the EOS 40D, two new EF-S series lenses are available today:

  • EF-S 18-55MM f / 3.5-5.6 IS - high-quality standard wide-angle zoom lens with four-step image stabilizer

  • EF-S 55-250MM f / 4-5.6 IS - a telephoto lens with zoom, the widest range of focal lengths in the EF-S series and a four-stage image stabilizer

Software

EOS 40D comes with standarda software package to help the photographer in the work with images. It includes the program Digital Photo Professional (DPP) - an effective tool for converting files in RAW format, giving full control over the process of processing images in the RAW format.

DPP integrates with camera functions such asDust Delete Data and Picture Style. Now users can create their own Picture Style settings using the included Picture Style Editor application. The package also includes applications EOS Utility, ZoomBrowser / ImageBrowser and PhotoStitch.

Description of technologies

CMOS sensor

One of the key advantages of Canon camerasis CMOS image sensor technology. The noise reduction scheme used in these sensors in each area of the pixel makes it possible to obtain images with practically zero noise level. In comparison with CCD technology, CMOS sensors are characterized by lower power consumption, which increases the battery life.

In Canon's CMOS sensors, the signal is convertedseparate amplifiers located at each pixel site. Therefore, it is possible to avoid unnecessary stages in the process of charge transfer and to accelerate the time of signal transfer to the image processor. This allows you to reduce noise, limit power consumption and improve the speed of shooting.

Integrated system for cleaning the image matrix of the EOS

The integrated image sensor cleaning system of the EOS mirror camera fights dust on the sensor in three ways: preventing the appearance of dust, repelling and eliminating it.

  • Prevent the appearance of dust - the internal elements of the camera are designed in such a way as to reduce the appearance of dust. The camera body prevents the appearance of dust when worn.

  • Dust repulsion - a low-pass filter located in front of the image sensor is created using an antistatic material, so it repels dust.

  • Dust removal - self-cleaning sensorimage uses high-frequency oscillations to "shake" the dust from the infrared filter for about one second after each switch-on. For instant start of shooting after power-on, this function is immediately disabled when the shutter is released.

Canon also developed the internal Dust systemDelete Data, which determines the position of visible dust particles on the image sensor. After shooting, the traces of this dust can be automatically deleted using the latest version of the Digital Photo Professional software.

Picture Style

New Picture Style with pre-programmedinstalled modes greatly simplifies the quality control of images in the camera. Preset Picture Style modes can be compared with different types of film, having a different level of sensitivity. Within each preset mode, you can adjust the sharpness, Contrast, tone and color saturation. The factory settings of the camera allow you to quickly start working with JPEG images without having to set additional settings in the menu. When shooting in RAW format, the preset Picture Style modes allow you to edit the resulting images using the Canon Digital Photo Professional software.

Six pre-set shooting modes include:

  • Standard: provides bright and reliable color rendering, does not require post-processing

  • Portrait: optimizes tone and color saturation, reduces image sharpness for a pleasant skin tone

  • Landscape: increases the saturation of green and blue, as well as sharpness, providing a more accurate image of mountains, trees and building outlines

  • Neutral: ideal for post-treatment

  • Plausible: adjusts the color during shooting at a color temperature below 5200K

  • Monochrome: suitable for monochrome shooting using various filters (yellow, orange, red and green) and toning (sepia, blue, purple and green).

Custom Picture Stylecan be used to store three user settings or any customization files. In addition, users can create their own Picture Style settings using the included Picture Style Editor application.

Software

Software Digital Photo Professional

Digital Photo SoftwareProfessional is designed for high-speed and high-quality processing of RAW images recorded without loss of image quality. It allows you to display images in real time, as well as instantly view the results of the changes made, giving full control over the parameters of RAW images: white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation and color shades.

Pictures can be saved in colorsRGB or Adobe RGB space. The program Digital Photo Professional supports color spaces sRGB, Adobe RGB, ColorMatch RGB, Apple RGB and Wide Gamut RGB.

ICC profiles can be applied to imagesformat TIFF or JPEG when converting from RAW format. This ensures accurate color in programs that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. Image settings can be saved and then applied to other images, which will also help improve the efficiency.

In the latest software versionDigital Photo Professional realized in 3 times faster image viewing, advanced noise reduction and batch processing of images in TIFF and JPEG formats.

EOS application

The latest version of the EOS application has been addedremote camera support, camera settings and live viewing mode, as well as OSK-E3 data protection kit and tools for setting up the WFT-E2 wireless file transmitter.

You can configure the EOS application to control the"Hot folders", which will automatically rename and move the transferred images to a structured file system. This solution is ideal for those who often transfer files over Wi-Fi, as well as studio photographers, who are more convenient to save pictures directly on the computer.
