New Zealand delphiniums

New Zealand delphiniums - a popular exampleapplied gardening. This is a perennial frost-resistant plant with sturdy stems and large bright double flowers (about 7 cm in diameter) of very different coloring. White, purple, pink, blue, blue ... The variety and richness of colors amaze the imagination.

Thanks to a well-developed root systemDelphinium is widely used in our domestic latitudes. So, let's study the way to grow this beautiful plant, as well as the conditions necessary for this.

How to grow a delphinium

The method of reproduction is simple - with the help of seeds, which are sown in spring or autumn. If you collect seeds in the summer, then with the onset of autumn, you can proceed to planting. However, the proper storage of seeds should be organized, since their germination depends on this factor. Seeds of New Zealand delphiniums, waiting for the planting season, are best kept in the refrigerator.

In the beginning of spring we prepare the soil, we takeshallow tanks and carry out "disembarkation". Then mix the soil with sand and sprinkle the planted seeds with a thin layer of 0.5 - 1 cm, after which we close our dishes with polyethylene in order to maintain moisture. Now you can send our crops to a cold place (temperature up to +5 degrees) for about 2 weeks.

After the expiry of the term, the container with seedsis released from the polyethylene "captivity" and placed, for example, on the illuminated window sill - while the temperature in the room should be up to 20 degrees. We are waiting for the first shoots! When there is a lack of lighting, the delphinium seedlings can be illuminated with a lamp to prevent the plants from stretching. When a young plant no longer fits in a vessel with a lid, it's time to plant it in an open ground, on the sunny side. Do not forget to water and fertilize our delphinium.

How to care for a delphinium

Care is a fairly simple procedure, so caresgardeners will not increase. Before planting seedlings, the soil must be well treated and fertilized, and in the pit for planting add a little sand. When planting, make sure that the brownish "neck" of the plant is at the level of the soil, without penetration. As the shoots grow, periodic fertilizing of the delphinium with mineral fertilizers is necessary.

Thinning shrubs is necessary upon reachingstalks 30-40 cm, after which we tie the bushes. Did your delphinium grow? In this case, make a second garter - a height of 100 cm. In hot weather, water the bushes once a week. When the plant blooms, cut the stems and then in the fall you can admire the repeated flowering.

We protect from the winter

Before the onset of winter cold, our delphiniums need protection. For this we carry out a number of activities:

  • Crop the plants, leaving small penechki - up to 30 cm.

  • We cover with a layer of needles.

  • We provide dryness during "wintering", for which it is possible to strengthen the protective shelter for young "New Zealander".

As practice shows, delphiniums "live" on the site for about 10 years, but inadequate hydration and a lack of fertilizers can lead to the death of these handsome men.

New Zealand delphiniums look great inas a flower bed - imagine a "multistage" landing from high hybrids, annual field plants and undersized delphiniums with large flowers. Plants of different height will shade and perfectly complement each other. As for the colors, here - as fantasy tells.

It can be a strictly sustained colorcomposition. And maybe - a complete riot of colors in the form of pink, purple, blue and red flowers. In addition, such splendor does not require much effort - once we sow seeds, and in the future they are dug themselves. So your garden plot can easily be turned into an amazing flower garden.
