The Great Post is the most important and ancientChristian fasting. During this period, the believers are preparing for an important Orthodox holiday - Christ's Resurrection, which must be met with a pure soul. Therefore, fasting calls on a person not only to bodily purification, but also spiritual deliverance from impure thoughts. According to the church canons, fasting is a saving tool for the soul, opening the door to God. How many weeks does the Great Lent in Russia last? The duration of Fasting is 48 days, of which forty days (the Fourteenth Day) and the last week before the Bright Sunday are Holy Week. The first week of Lent: what can you eat?



Before the beginning of Lent, in ForgivenessSunday or Sinuous, believers still are allowed to eat dairy products and eggs. In the days of the first week of Lent, from Monday to Thursday, evening services are held. This time for special repentance, zealous prayers, and strict abstinence in food. The church only allows for short meals, without heat treatment.



According to church regulations, on Monday it is recommendedcomplete abstinence from food, and drink only water. Bread, vegetables and fruit in the post can be eaten on Tuesday, and the believers' menu on Wednesday and Friday should include raw food without butter. Tuesday and Thursday are days in which cooking is allowed on the fire, but also without the addition of oil. But on Saturday and Sunday of the Great Lent some loosening is allowed in the form of a small amount of wine, and when cooking food you can add vegetable oil.

The second week of Lent - food specialties



This week is dedicated to the memory of Gregory Palam, the champion of monastic life. These days the church services are held, on which eternal Orthodox truths are preached - prayer, faith and good deeds.




Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the second weekLent should be followed by dry eating, without vegetable oil. Ready meals can be added to the diet on Tuesday and Thursday (all also without oil). Saturday and Sunday are allowed days for consuming dishes with vegetable oil, and a little (about 200 ml) of red wine without alcohol content can be added to the meal.



Churchmen throughout the weekit is allowed to eat only once a day. But laymen are allowed some relaxation and changes in the rules of fasting, depending on health and overall well-being.



The Third Week of Lent 2016

On Saturday the sixth week (April 23) Orthodoxnote Lazarev Saturday - in the menu you can add fish eggs. The next day, on Palm Sunday, laymen can eat fish and fish dishes, as well as red wine.



Seventh week of Lent 2016 (Holy Week)



Last week before Easter or Passionweek is the strictest week of fasting. Every day of Holy Week is dedicated to the remembrance of the last days of the earthly life of Jesus Christ, His suffering, death on the Cross and burial.



According to church canons, Holy Week is not includedin the Great Lent. This is the time when God comes to meet us, overcoming suffering, Calvary and other obstacles - until the Day of the Bright Easter. In Christianity, the most important days of Holy Week are the last three days before Easter. A particularly strict day of fasting is Good Friday, during which it is planned to abstain completely from food. As the church says, it was on Friday that Jesus Christ was crucified, offering Himself as a sacrifice for human sins.



On Saturday, one should adhere to moderation in food (dry eating), and on Easter comes the Easter holiday, when all restrictions in food are lifted. In 2016, the faithful celebrate Easter on May 1.
