The Assumption Post is considered almost as strict,like the Lent - during this period it is not allowed to eat fish and fish dishes, except for the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. According to the church canons, the Assumption Post is a preparatory stage for the great church holiday - the Assumption of the Most-holy Lady of Our Lady and Ever-Virgin Mary.
As the church tradition says, it was on this daythe ascension of the Most-Holy Theotokos to the Kingdom of Heaven, about which Gabriel, who appeared to her, appeared. What kind of food can be taken to the Assumption Post in 2016? According to the church calendar, believers should adhere to such a food system:
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday are allowed to eat vegetables, fruits, dried fruits, rusks, nuts, honey. You can drink water, and from the seasonings only salt is allowed.

Christmas post (November 28 - January 6, 2017)
The beginning of the Christmas fast falls on 28November 2016, and the end - as early as January 6, 2017. This winter Orthodox fast continues from late autumn until Christmas. Another name for the Christmas fast is the Philippi Post, as it begins just after St. Philip's day, celebrated on November 27th.
The main purpose of Christmasis to bring gratitude to the Lord God for the fruits of earthly goods - in the form of abstinence spiritual and bodily. The basic principles of nutrition in the Nativity Post (for the period until December 19) fully coincide with the Petrov Lent. But after the St. Nicholas Day, it is permitted to eat fish on weekends.
Eating in an Orthodox fast before Christmas
On the feast of the Nativity, the Church's charterimposes restrictions on fish on weekdays, and on weekends, it is allowed to have hot food with vegetable oil. In addition, before the first star in the sky on Christmas Eve (before Christmas), you should refrain from food. Then, when the hour comes, you can eat boiled wheat grains or rice, seasoned with honey, dried fruits or jam. This dish is called "kutya" or "osovo".
