Dog breeds: smooth-haired fox terrier
Fox Terriers - one of the most popular representatives of a large group of terriers. There are two separate breeds of fox terriers: smooth-haired fox terrier and coarse-eyed fox terrier. The first variety is not so popular among dog lovers, but this does not mean that it does not deserve our attention.
Both smooth-haired and woolly-haired Foxterriers were brought out primarily for hunting foxes (this is also the name of the breed, because the word fox is translated from English as "fox"). Despite the similarities, they are two different breeds, and not varieties of the same.
Initially, smooth-haired fox terriers weremuch more common, but somewhere from the 20s of the XX century, the hairless fox terrier became more popular. Until now, the coarse-eyed fox terrier remains more common than the smooth-haired, but and smooth-haired foxes have their fans.
Smooth haired fox terrier refers to large and medium sized terriers. The standard of weight is 7.3-8.2 kg for males and 6.8-7.7 kg for bitches. This breed has a smooth and straight coat. It is thick, dense, stiff, fitting. The predominant color in color is white, reddish-brown, black or black-tan spots are permissible.
Despite the relatively small size, smooth-haired fox terrier is distinguished by a rather large physical strength. This breed has a good athletic build, special attention should be paid to the long and powerful hips of the dog: they allow smooth-haired fox terriers to make strong jumps.
Smooth-haired fox terrier - smart and energetic dog. Foxes need to be given a lot of attention, becausethey easily get bored. It is a companion dog that needs almost constant attention. With a smooth-haired fox you need to walk often and long, these dogs need physical activity.
but for a walk it is advisable to keep the Fox on a leash: at the sight of a cat or other dog, the hunter's instinct can take over, and the smooth-haired fox terrier will begin harassment, ignoring your commands.
This is a natural behavior for the Fox Terriers, who were taken out as hunters. Your task is not to punish Fox for harassing dogs, cats and cyclists, but simply redirect the boiling energy of your Fox to another channel to distract the dog. Play with Fox, distracting him from the potential objects of pursuit, and then he will not do anything. Well, do not forget about the leash.
If we try to apply to the foxes the familiar classification of temperaments, then the smooth-haired fox terrier can rightly be called a choleric. This is a living, emotional dog with an independent character. Foxes are friendly, sociable and playful. Despite his character as a choleric, the smooth-haired fox terrier is a silent dog, he does not bark without the utmost need.
Smooth-haired fox terrier gets along well with children. He is able to become a companion for the childgames and even a friend. However, when communicating with young children, you need to look after them carefully: a child may inadvertently cause pain to the dog, and, perhaps, Fox will not remain in debt.
Wool smooth-haired fox terrier needs minimal care using a terry towel or sponge. From time to time, the hair needs to be combed, and also the smooth-haired fox terrier needs regular clipping and cleaning of the ears. In addition, you will need to cut out the wool between the pads of the paws. It is still very desirable to clean the fox terrier teeth, if this procedure does not cause you significant difficulties.
With proper care and sufficient physical activity smooth-haired fox terrier can live 12-15 years and more (some dogs survived to 19 years). It is a wonderful companion dog for mobile people who like sports or even just long walks. A tireless fox will always make them a great company.
