This breed was named after his homeland- the British county of Norfolk. Initially, Norfolk Terriers and Norwich Terriers were considered to be one breed (by the way, there is still a divergence of opinions about who the ancestor belongs to: Norfolk Norwich or vice versa). But in 1964 Norfolk Terrier was recognized as a separate breed. The main (but not the only) difference between these two breeds is ears: in Norvich they are highly placed, in Norfolk they hang.


As we have already said, Norfolk Terrier refers to small terriers: the height of the dog at the withers is on the average 23-26 cm, weight - about 5 kg. Bitches are usually slightly smaller than males. Despite its small size, this breed is distinguished by fearlessness and endurance: Norfolk Terrier in the first place - huntinga dog that was used to hunt not only for rodents and hares, but also small predators, for example, foxes, weasels, ferrets. Norfolk are sometimes called "demons on the hunt" for their fearless temper.


Norfolk Terrier is a strong and squat dog with strong bones, compact. mobile and energetic. The Norfolk Terriers have a hard wire-like wool 4-5 cm in length. The integumentary wool tightly adjoins to a body,there is an undercoat. The coat is slightly longer on the neck and shoulders, it forms a kind of "frill", the same coat on the throat and at the base of the ears. But on the ears and head, the coat is smooth and short (except for slightly expressed mustache and eyebrows).


Admissible colors of Norfolk Terriers all shades of wheat, red (red), red with black or graying are considered. We admit black carp, but white spots and marks are undesirable.


Norfolk Terrier - A cheerful and friendly dog ​​with a balanced character, devoted to its owner. Norfolk are fine with children, so they become excellent companions and even full members of the family. Also, dogs of this breed usually get along well with other pets, especially if they grow with them.


This breed should in no case be aggressive, but in the case of immediate threat NorfolkTerriers are able to stand up for themselves and their master. Norfolk Terrier can become an excellent watchman. It is also believed that Norfolk Terriers are more sociable than Norwegians.


Norfolk Terrier can live in a city apartment (even a small one), but it is important to remember that Norfolk, like all terriers, need proper physical activity and long walks. This breed is not hard to train, but keep in mind that the training of terriers usually requires determination and perseverance.


Raising the Norfolk should start at an early age, so that all the positive qualities of the character are fully manifested. Therefore, firstly, you need to clearly give the dog to understand what can not be done, and secondly, it is important to give your pet enough attention, because the games with the owner for him are very important.


Care of fur Norfolk Terrier does not present special difficulties. At least two or three times a week, you need to comb your pet with a metal comb or a stiff bristle brush made of natural bristles, you can use a pudding for the muzzle and paws. Also, care for the wool includes periodic trimming (plucking), usually twice a year - in the fall and in the spring. This procedure is best entrusted to a specialist.
