And although officially the holiday is not included in the church calendar, its holding coincides with the Christian Cheese Week - the last full week before the Great Lent. The Orthodox Church does not forbid its followers to participate in cheerful Shrovetide festivities. Traditions for Pancake Day: the main rites and their meaning
In Russia, the celebration of Shrovetide coincided withthe spring equinox, which falls on March 21. It was believed that it was at this time that spring begins to enter into its rights, and winter and cold finally recede. Consequently, the Maslenitsa itself among the Slavs was a holiday of spring and fertility. Hence the main tradition of this holiday, associated with the worship of the cult of the Sun - baking pancakes, which are symbolized by small suns. According to another version, pancakes for Shrovetide were baked in honor of the deceased ancestors, like commemorative bread. It was believed that the deceased on the days of celebration visit their relatives and may affect the future harvest.
