The engine of the new Type-R is the latest stage in the evolution of the engine i-VTEC in volume of 2 liters. The engine combines a proprietary system Honda VTEC (system for changing the height and opening timeintake valves) with a variable valve timing system VTC (Variable Timing Control). Under the control of the VTEC system, the valves stay open longer at a high engine speed in order to get more fuel into the cylinders, and also to allow enough time for the gases to overcome their inertia.



At low and medium engine speed,when too long opening of valves can lead to the fact that the sucked fuel-air mixture can flow back, and the exhaust gases return to the cylinder, the valves remain open for less time.



The result is optimized gas flow, which allows you to achieve the highest power limit along with high torque for each section of the engine operating range.



VTC is capable of setting an earlier orlater opening the intake valve by changing the position of the intake camshaft, which makes it possible to achieve the ideal matching of the load on the engine to its capabilities at any time.



VTC system takes into account the load on the engine, changingthe position of the intake camshaft relative to the position of the exhaust camshaft via a hydraulic actuator located at the front end of the intake camshaft.



During periods of high engine load(ie, acceleration), the VTC sets a relatively small degree of overlapping of the valves, which allows for optimum power in this mode, with the opening angle of the intake valve allowing the intake air to be used as efficiently as possible.



In addition, as the speed increasesengine, the VTEC mechanism switches from low-profile cam to high-profile cam (ie from the optimum torque to the optimum power), but with the same degree of overlap.



Both systems work together under tightcontrol of the electronic engine control unit, which allows to achieve the optimum number of working mixture entering the cylinders, its efficient combustion, lowering the resistance at the inlet and improving the recirculation of the exhaust gases.



This combination of two systems - VTEC and VTC - received the name i-VTEC. Technology i-VTEC allows to achieve an impressive elasticity of the engine due to the ability to maximize the potential of the engine in the entire operating range.



A distinctive, gentle curve of torque is evidence of the effectiveness of this technology: at 2 500 minˉ¹ the engine produces 90% of the maximum possible torque.



At low engine speeds at idle andin the low-load mode, the opening of the intake valve occurs with a delay for a minimum overlap, which produces strong turbulence and, consequently, a good mixing of the fuel-air mixture.
