Birthmarks on the body and their dangers
The medical name of a birthmark is a nevus. This benign accumulation of pigments on the skin, congenital or appear throughout the life of a person. Each birthmark is unique - in size, color and shape. We will get acquainted with these characteristics more closely.
Classification of nevi
By size
Giant - cover large areas of the body, (for example, the chest or face).
Large (10-centimeter birthmarks).
Medium (up to 10 cm).
Small (up to 15 mm).
By color, location and shape
Vascular, or hemangiomas - cyanotic, pink or red nevi, formed by involutional endothelial cells.
Non-vascular nevi is one or more points with a cornified upper layer. They have a variety of shapes and shades (light brown, beige-gray, black, etc.)
Setton's birthmarks are the benign formation that surrounds the ring of depigmented skin.
Blue nevuses are dense convex birthmarks with a smooth surface of a blue or blue hue.
Dysplastic birthmarks are brownish-red or brown nevuses from 4 to 12 mm with fuzzy boundaries.
Modern medicine divides nevi into two groups: those that can "degenerate" into malignant tumors, and those that do not pose a threat to humans.
Why birthmarks grow
A newborn child can have no birthmarks at all, but with time they certainly appear. The number of nevi can increase throughout life. Why is this happening?
The natural growth of moles can be the reasontoo long exposure to the sun, various dermatological diseases and changes in the hormonal background. Pathological neoplasms appear on the basis of malignant degeneration of a normal birthmark. Properly identify the nature of a nevi can only a dermatologist or an oncologist.
Accidental damage to the birthmark
If you inadvertently tore off or damagedbirthmark, treat the wound with hydrogen peroxide and, just in case, consult a doctor. A torn off pigmented piece of skin, if possible, retain it - it needs to be examined in order to reveal the cancer cells, if they are there.
Signs indicating the malignancy of the damaged nevus:
after a trauma, the mole hurts and itches;
the skin around the mole is inflamed;
On the place of the torn stain there are small nodules;
the stain increases in size;
the skin in place of the torn birthmark changes color;
for no apparent reason, bleeding is resumed on the damaged area of the skin.
Signs of birthmarks that should alert you
The birthmark has an asymmetric shape.
The outlines of the birthmark are fuzzy and unclear.
The nevus suddenly increased in size.
Birthmark grows inside.
On the birthmark appear white or dark strips, dots or blotches.
The mole covered with small moles.
On the mole appeared dry or bleeding cracks or crusts.
If you find on your skin at least one of thelisted dangerous symptoms, you should not hesitate to contact an oncodermatologist or a local dermatologist, who will refer you to a surgeon or oncologist if necessary.
Remember that the appearance of new pigmentaryspots on the skin - a normal process, programmed by the characteristics of the human body. At the same time, do not forget to follow the already available nevi, which can lead to the formation of new, sometimes malignant, birthmarks. Timely detected skin cancer (melanoma) significantly increases the chances of effective treatment and prevention of new complications.
