Opera Unite extension

The Opera Unite extension allows users share files on a peer-to-peer network (peer-to-peer, p2p), the same principle is based on such well-known file transfer technologies as BitTorrent, Direct Connect (DC ++), etc.

If you share files with your friends using file sharing or social networks, then you first upload the file to the file sharing server or social network, and the friend downloads it. The Opera Unite extension allows you to do without uploading files to the server. In this case, the servers of the company Opera Software are used not as a storage location; they provide a connection for computers to transfer files.

How to use Opera Unite? To begin with, you need an installed Opera browser version 10.10 and higher. To activate this extension, click on the Opera icon at the top left of the browser window, in the menu that opens, select Opera Unite → Enable Opera Unite.

A configuration window opens with brief information about the extension to start setting up Opera Unite, click Next. You will be asked to create an account (if you have an account on dev.opera.com, my.opera com or you use Opera Link, you do not need to create it, just click the "I already have an account" button).

In the form fields, enter the desired user name, password (twice) and e-mail address. In the user name, you can not use slash (slash), period, space, and underscore. Check the checkbox "I agree with the terms of the agreement" and click Next. Now you need to specify computer name. It will be used to assign your personal computer a personal web address in the Opera Unite service. This address will look like this:

http://имя_компьютера.имя_пользователя.operaunite.com

You can choose a name from the list of suggested(home, office, work, school, notebook) or enter your own. After selecting the computer name, click Finish. The Opera Unite tab opens. In the left part of the browser window will open the sidebar of Opera Unite. There will be controls for six applications for information exchange:

  File Sharing Opens access to your files on the computer (analogous to the file-changer);

  Fridge allows you to leave notes to your friends (analog microblogging): Fridge is a refrigerator, the developers compare the application with the notes left on the refrigerator for the household;
• 
  Media Player - an application for sharing music and streaming music (analogue file sharing and online player);
• 
  Messenger - an application for messaging with other users of Opera Unite (the equivalent of any other program for instant messaging);
• 
  Photo Sharing - application for creating photo albums (analogue file sharing and photo hosting);
• 
  Web Server allows you to host a functioning site on your computer.

To start using the application, double-click on it, select the folder on your computer to whichyou want to open access (if necessary) and check or uncheck the additional settings (open or close the application for indexing by search engines, display the application on Opera Unite web pages, access the application inside the local network).

On the home page of Opera Unite (http://unite.opera.com) in the Applications section, you can download and install other useful applications for Opera Unite. Developers strongly recommend not to download applications from third-party sites to avoid security problems.

Of course, Opera Unite can not become fullreplacement of file sharing and peer-to-peer networks: to provide access to data on your computer, it needs to be connected to the Internet with an open browser Opera and have sufficient bandwidth of the channel. But in some cases, the extension of Opera Unite can be very convenient.
