Aerofobia: fear of flyingThanks to the invention of aircraft, humanitywas able to travel long distances in a relatively short time. Here only there is a category of people who several hours on the plane will prefer a few days in a train or a bus. Not because it's expensive - they just are afraid to panic. The fear of flying was called aerophobia.

Not in all cases, aerophobia is a separate phobia. Often, aerophobia indicates the presence of other phobias in a person, for example, fear of height (acrophobia) or closed spaces (claustrophobia). And usually adults suffer this phobia: aerophobia often appears at the age of 25 years and older.

The reason for such a "popularity" of fear of air travel lies in the fact that flights on airplanes are becoming more popular both in professional activities and in the field of tourism. In addition, air crashes always cause greater resonance than car accidents, although in fact they happen much less often.

How is aerophobia manifested? Usually a person suffering from this phobia tries to avoid air travel in all possible ways, daring them only when there are no other options at all. Aerophobia makes itself felt in advance: a few days before the upcoming flight, a person begins to get nervous.

Already in the plane, aerophobia affects the body's activity: a person experiencing fear of flying, the heart rate increases, the breathing becomes rapid or inconsistent, muscles tighten, palms begin to sweat. He scrolls through the head of the details of the disasters massacred in the media, with suspicion of the behavior of the crew.

What if you have aerophobia? How to overcome the fear of flying? Some try to drown fear with alcohol, cheer up with the help of coffee or power engineers. But Alcohol and caffeine are not the best helpers in the fight against aerophobia, they can only aggravate stress. In extreme cases, it is better to drink some sedative (preferably natural, on herbs) or light sleeping pills.

Aerophobia is "fueled" by a sense of discomfort. Therefore, it is important to provide yourself in the plane with maximum comfort. Ask the stewardess for a head pillow andplaid. In the ears insert ear plugs, and you can take the player with a fun or soothing music or your favorite book. And if you calm down and feel safe you are helped by your favorite teddy bear, take aboard and him, and do not care what others think! If you believe in God - pray, this too can help to calm down.

Sometimes aerophobia surrenders under the onslaught of logical arguments. No matter how terrible the air crashes, statistics show that air travel remains the most secure type of travel. On the earth, much more accidents happen. No wonder, because get (and in some cases - just buy) car rights may not be the best driver. And to study for a pilot you need a long and hard, and besides, a newcomer who has just received a license will never be allowed to fly the first pilot on a passenger flight.

In some cases aerophobia is a consequence of ignorance and fear of the incomprehensible. Not understanding how a huge metala machine full of people, stay in the air, and not just hold on, but move long distances, a person begins to fear. The aerophobia is aggravated by the inability to control something itself: a person's life during an air flight depends solely on the serviceability of the aircraft and the professionalism of the crew.

What to do in this case? Try to defeat the enemy ... knowledge. At leisure, read about the arrangement of aircraft. Do not need to understand it thoroughly, justunderstand for themselves the principle of their work, so that you no longer feel like the aircraft fly against the laws of nature. Read the biographies of the famous pilots who came out victorious in almost hopeless situations (for example, Canadian pilots managed to land a plane at an altitude of 8 kilometers, the engines refused).

If aerophobia does not recede, you can contact a specialist. The psychologist will teach special techniques of relaxation, and eventually the flight will start to associate you not with panic, but with relaxation. Now aerophobia is treated withcomputer technologies (simulation of virtual reality): there are special simulators that allow simulating flight on an airplane. Aerophobia is "activated", and relaxation skills can be practiced.

Aerophobia is quite common fear, which prevents you from traveling normally. But to cure the fear of flying is quite realistic: if aerophobia does not go too far, logical arguments or relaxation can help, but expert help may also be needed.
